B.S. – Mechanical Engineering, 2020
Seeing how thoroughly systems are developed by leadership has been the best motivation for me to follow up and design my projects as well as I can. I know that this drive towards well performing engineering work that I have acquired through Illini Motorsports will be with me for my entire career. Whether interested in racing or not, joining this team will put you in great direction.

Formula SAE has helped me greatly in bridging the gap between theory and practice. The team has allowed to me have complete ownership of a project through its entire life cycle, from research and design, all the way to implementation and testing, and then all over again to make it better! I have gained unique insights by working with students from numerous majors, including Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering. The diverse and long list of projects taking place each year ensure there is always an interesting challenge to take on for students of all backgrounds. Lastly, the fast-paced schedule and tight-knit environment have led me to improve my problem-solving and teamwork skills which further allows me to thrive in ordinary classwork.

I have loved my experience in Illini Motorsports so far. It has helped me make connections with a wide array of engineering students who I would not have met otherwise. I am a rising sophomore and I have already been able to work on the car and provide tangible contributions to the car and the team. Illini Motorsports fosters a supportive, fun, and educational environment and I highly recommend it for students looking for a real world application of their studies.

There’s a lot of things you learn in lecture halls at Illinois, but also a ton of things that you won’t. The challenges posed by Formula have been extremely unique and forced me to develop my skills in many facets of engineering that you’d be hard pressed to find in a classroom.

Ph.D. – Material Science and Engineering, 2023
I joined Illini Motorsports when I came to UIUC for my PhD in 2018. I’m not involved in the design and manufacturing process as much I’d like to be with my research keeping me busy, but I am amazed by the team’s knowledge and abilities. Being a part of this team has greatly enriched my experience at UIUC. I’ve learned a great deal from this group of extraordinarily dedicated and talented group of students, who somehow manage to design and build a race car from scratch while balancing a demanding curriculum. Whether it’s vehicle dynamics, mechanics, materials, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, or electronics (and other fields I’m certainly forgetting), you can find the knowledge on this team. I am always impressed by their depth of understanding and the ability of this multifaceted team to communicate and come together to build an incredible race car. It’s been a pleasure to work with the team and of course it’s always a blast to drive the car!
